2 Genesis 22: A father sacrifices His Son
Tested not tempted Your ONLY son – no recognition of Ishmael “Go to the land of Moriah” (The land God sees or the land God reveals) To one of the mountains (a particular mountain) I will show you The Father must offer his son Hosea 12 verse 10 – a similitude of the sacrifice of Christ So 2000 years before the crucifixion Abraham, as a similitude, is told to sacrifice his son on a particular mountain in Moriah

3 Genesis 22: A father sacrifices His Son
Abraham would have approached from the south Mount Moriah is on 3 levels rising from south to north 1st comes what later became the City of David – the southern ridge where the city of Jerusalem was and where Hezekiah was King Next comes a plateau where Solomon built the Temple – more on this later Finally is the highest point, which was outside the wall of the city where Golgotha or Skull Hill or ‘The Place of the Skull’ is found How do we know this was the same place as Jerusalem, The Temple Mount and Calvary? Because God showed the same place to David 1000 years later as the place where his son Solomon must build the temple

11 Genesis 22: A father sacrifices His Son
2 Samuel 24 verses 16 – 25 God tells David to buy the threshing floor of Ornan the Jubusite 2 Samuel 24 verse 24 the price for the threshing floor 1 Chronicles 21 verses 16 – 28 – 600 shekels of Gold Indicates that one price was for just the threshing floor but that the whole area was holy ground and was purchased David told that because of his warlike ways and the shedding of blood he would not build the temple (1 Chronicles 28 v 3) Solomon builds the temple on Mount Moriah (2 Chronicles 3 v 1)

12 Genesis 22: A father sacrifices His Son
Threshing

13 Genesis 22: A father sacrifices His Son
Winnowing with a winnowing fork or winnowing fan

14 Genesis 22: A Father sacrifices His Son
Matthew 3 verse 12 winnowing fork a picture of Jesus gathering believers and judging unbelievers Isaiah 41 verse 15 threshing sledge A picture of God raising up his people to stand with Him in judgement Interesting that the place chosen by God was both the place of sacrifice and the place carrying the symbols of judgement. And God will provide Himself a lamb We accept his substitutionary sacrifice and are gathered Or we do not and we are chaff and are burned with unquenchable fire

15 Genesis 22: A Father sacrifices His Son
Why outside the wall Hebrews 13 v tells us Jesus was sacrificed outside the camp just as sacrifices for sin were burned outside the camp Adulterers, murderers were taken outside the city and stoned to death; Lepers lived outside the city and cried out, “unclean, unclean”. Leviticus 4 v 12 – Leviticus 6 v 11, Leviticus 16 v 27 & Exodus 29 v 14 are all examples of the sin offering (burnt offering) being taken outside the camp Hebrews 10 verses 3 & 4 tell us that these are reminders of the seriousness of sin but these do not take away sins. That the sacrificial offering of Christ would deal with sin once and for all. We should endure the reproach that he endured? What is meant by this? The letter is written to Hebrew Christians, hated by the Jews and therefore bearing the reproach of Christ whom they also hated

16 Genesis 22: A Father sacrifices His Son
Why outside the wall Jesus being crucified outside the city wall was a message to us in two parts First He was offered outside the city because He was a sin offering and He was made unclean He who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Cor 5 verse 21) Second it tells us that when we become his disciples we become unclean to the world – they will hate us We cannot seek to stay in the city and also be His disciples – we will be unpopular We will also be at our most fruitful when we step out of the city Everything about this early similitude is consistent with the rest of Scripture
