1 ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION

2 Once the colonists declared independence in 1776, they needed a government to run the new country. As a result, the Continental Congress passed a plan for a national government – THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION

3 All the states approved the Article of Confederation in 1781 and it became the official government.

4 The national government would be run by a Continental Congress.

5 The national government could wage war, make peace, sign treaties, and issue money.

6 When the war was over, the government under the Articles negotiated a peace with England.

The treaty ending the war gave the U.S all the territory east of the Mississippi River. The government under the Articles passed the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance to organize the territory.

8 What were the colonists most afraid of in forming a new government?
Too much power in the hands of one is what caused this messy Revolution in the first place!

9 This fear led to the Articles of Confederation leaving most of the power to the states.

10 The Articles created a very weak national government and had many weaknesses.
