This discharged ED patient is obtaining a prescription medication from an InstyMeds machine in the ED waiting room. Earlier, at registration, the InstyMeds system received information from the patient registration system using an HL7 interface and insurance card scanner. After seeing the patient, the physician entered the prescription electronically, using either a palm or hospital computer-based system. At the same time, the patient had the option to either fill the prescription at the InstyMeds dispenser or receive a printed prescription to take to the pharmacy. If the patient chooses InstyMeds, the system verifies coverage and adjudicates insurance claims. At the dispenser, the patient enters the prescription order number and his or her birth date for validation, and then enters a credit or debit card or cash to pay for the prescription or the co-pay. The medication is labeled and dispensed within 4 minutes.
