2. What is Arab Spring? Why the name Arab Spring?
Series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011.
Why the name Arab Spring?
reference to the Revolutions of 1848
"Spring" connotation (Prague Spring, a reform movement in Czechoslovakia in 1968)

3. What started the movement?
17 December 2010: In Tunisia, fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi lights himself aflame after being apprehended by police for failing to have a license to sell goods. His demonstration sparks nationwide protests to end the Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s rule.

8. Post Arab Spring (violence)
Arab Spring led some improvements in the Middle East from a human- rights perspective.
Arab Spring emphasized Middle East’s intolerance towards the dictatorship and lack of human rights support.
Muammar Gaddafi, Libya’s former dictator was tortured by fighters of opposition and publicly executed. Although, his death triggered the civil war.
The civil war in Syria is also another example about the outcomes of the Arab Spring, Bashar Al Assad is still in power while ISIS has largely still defeating, the civil war also made thousands of citizens to leave their homes and loved ones.
Violence was a big part of the movement because that was the only way some people could show that they wanted change because of the corrupt governments
The movement also triggered the tension between the Muslim community (Sunni vs. Shia)

9. Tools and impact
Social Media - The first mass protest in Egypt was announced on Facebook by an anonymous group of activists, who in a few days managed to attract tens of thousands of people. The social media proved a powerful mobilization tool that helped the activists to outwit the police.

the 2011 uprisings are a catalyst for long-term change whose final outcome is yet to be seen

10. A major problem with this movement is that decades of authoritarian regimes could not be easily reversed and replaced with stable democratic systems across the region.

Why this movement important?
Arab Awakening demonstrated that Middle East will no longer tolerate the dictatorship.
The tension between the Muslim community re-surfaced.
Middle East’s most powerful “leaders” were either forced to step down or publicly executed.
