1 Naming Ternary Ionic Compounds
(Naming Compounds Containing Polyatomic Ions) Ternary Ionic Compounds ~ contain atoms of three or more different elements ~ usually contain one or more polyatomic ions Ternary ionic compounds are named by writing the name of the cation followed by the name of the anion (usually a polyatomic ion, which keeps its group name)

2 Know these polyatomic groups:
Carbonate (CO3)2- Nitrate (NO3)1- Phosphate (PO4)3- Sulfate (SO4)2- Hydroxide (OH)1- Ammonium (NH4)+

3 Practice Name the compounds: NaNO3 Ca3(PO4)2 KOH Li2CO3 Na2SO4

4 Practice Name the compounds: NaNO3 Ca3(PO4)2 KOH Li2CO3 Na2SO4 sodium
NaNO3 Ca3(PO4)2 KOH Li2CO3 Na2SO4 sodium nitrate calcium phosphate potassium hydroxide lithium carbonate sodium sulfate

5 Practice Name these compounds : Cu2CO3 Fe(NO3)3 Sn(OH)2 CrPO4

6 chromium (III) phosphate
Practice Name these compounds : Cu2CO3 Fe(NO3)3 Sn(OH)2 CrPO4 1+ 2- copper (I) carbonate 3+ 1- iron (III) nitrate 2+ 1- tin (II) hydroxide 3+ 3- chromium (III) phosphate

7 Practice Write formulas for: lead(II) nitrate potassium phosphate
Write formulas for: lead(II) nitrate potassium phosphate mercury(II) sulfate ammonium hydroxide

8 Practice Write formulas for: lead(II) nitrate potassium phosphate
Write formulas for: lead(II) nitrate potassium phosphate mercury(II) sulfate ammonium hydroxide Pb2+ (NO3)1- Pb(NO3)2 K1+ (PO4)3- K3(PO4) Hg2+ (SO4)2- HgSO4 (NH4)1+ (OH)1- NH4OH
