1 2/11/14 Endings 3 TP: Apply our understanding of good endings to our own writing Bell work: Using the picture below for ideas, come up with as many different problem and solution situations as you can in 5 minutes.

2 Using the story wheel Pick a character Pick a setting Pick a situation
WRITE!!!!!! ALIEN NEW YORK CITY GETTING LOST

3 Exemplar Zylorg looked around the car park and thought about the day he first arrived. It seemed like a lifetime ago. He was actually going to miss this planet and their ways of doing things. David finished fixing the craft and told him to come over. He went over, said goodbye to David and got in. He switched on the controls and waved to David. He hit the red button and disappeared. Can we make more specific vocabulary choices? The sentence structure is a bit repetitive. How can we edit this?

4 Improved Exemplar Glancing around the empty car lot, Zylorg couldn’t help thinking about that crazy day he first crash landed in the heart of New York City. It seemed like a lifetime ago now. A dawning realisation struck him: he was actually going to miss this planet and their strange customs. Mostly, however, he was going to miss David, who was putting the finishing touches to his supercharged and improved craft. As David motioned him over - indicating that the work was complete - Zylorg felt overwhelmed by that emotion humans called affection. The two embraced and then Zylorg climbed into the waiting craft. Firing up the controls, he gave a last wave to David before hitting the time-space accelerator. And, just as suddenly as he had arrived, Zylorg disappeared.

5 Paired Work Decide which type of ending you want to write from the 5 listed on your handout. Choose a character, setting and situation to write about (you can use the same character, setting and situation as you did for your opening) Write one or two paragraphs of resolution. Remember, do not write a whole story, just the ending!

6 Swap your endings with another pair
Write down two stars (things you liked about the other pair’s opening) and one wish (something they need to improve) Remember to be specific!
