1 Fractions and Mixed Numbers

2 Numerator Denominator Unit fraction The number down.
D – denominator D – down Unit fraction Numerator is always one

3 3 Mixed number Numerator Whole number Denominator The number down.
D – denominator D – down Mixed number

4 Adding fractions (Finding the sum)
5 + = When adding fractions, only add the numerator. The denominator stays the same.

5 Subtracting fractions (Finding the difference)
_ 2 = When subtracting fractions, only subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same.

6 Change a mixed number to an improper fraction
The Big “C”

7 5 = Ready??? + x Remember the denominator stays the same! 5 x 3 = 15

8 Let’s try it!! 2 4 = = 3 5 = = Wow!! You are good at this!!

9 Now let’s change improper fractions to mixed numbers
= 2 8 4 3 This becomes your whole number Divide the numerator by the denominator This is your denominator This becomes your numerator

10 Here we go!! 2 2 = = 5 5 = = Divide and conquer!!!

11 Subtracting with mixed numbers
7 6 = You cannot subtract 5 from 2 so….. We need to borrow or ungroup. - 5 5 = 1

12 Hold the phone, it’s time to multiply! (Finding the product)
