How it happened….. After 1911, when the last dynasty was overthrown, China became a republic After World War II, Nationalist party (led by Chiang Kai-shek) and Communist party (led by Mao Zedong) wage civil war In 1949, Communists take control, Nationalists flee to Taiwan, set up rival government

Under Mao Government took control of all land and factories
No religion Farmers organized into large government farms Women joined work force Dams helped improve economy If people opposed communism, they were killed!

After Mao: In 1976, Deng Xiaoping took over.
More economic freedom => better economy Still no political freedoms

Tiananmen Square In 1989, students protested lack of political freedoms, wanting democracy The government sent troops and killed thousands of protesters This led to outrage around the world Tiananmen Square activity

Other Countries’ Responses
Many other countries protested the Chinese governments harsh treatment of its citizens. They claim that the government has not given the people their basic human rights Look up the definition for human rights on p. 683.

Tibet In 1950, China took control of the region of Tibet.
The Tibetan people want independence. The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s Buddhist leader, lives in exile in India because of the government’s beliefs.

Chinese Society: 70% of people live in rural areas
Recently, many people are leaving farms and moving to cities.

China’s Culture Art: Often shows mountains, rivers, and forests.
Many Chinese paintings include a poem written in calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing. Chinese writing use characters that represent words or ideas instead of letters that represent sounds.

Chinese Architecture:
Most buildings in China’s cities are modern. Some buildings are Buddhist temples with many-storied towers called pagodas.
