The Judicial System How a case Gets to the Supreme Court Unit 6 Lesson 3

2 The Supreme Court Court cases reviewed by the Supreme Court are usually dealing with an issue that has been deemed unconstitutional, going against the Constitution. To get this before the Supreme Court someone had to challenge, to question, the law in the lower court system and decide that the ruling is still not good enough; so they bring it to the federal government.

3 The Supreme Court Lawyers from both sides will present the evidence by giving: one side that is defending or supporting the law that is being challenged one side that is arguing to have the law being challenged taken away All of 9 of the justices will listen to the evidence, have long conversations about the evidence, issue, the impact it has on America and if it supports or goes against the Constitution

4 The Supreme Court Supreme Court decides whether to review a case or not. If the court rules that it is unconstitutional, then the law is no longer used. There is always an odd number of judges on the Supreme court. Why?

5 The Supreme Court The Chief justice, is the judge who is in control of the Supreme Court and the other 8 are called other associate justices. Whenever important decisions are made in the Supreme Court, they are usually lumped together under the name of the Chief Justice at that time; like:
