Airmyn Park Primary School, Percy Drive, Airmyn, Goole, DN14 8NZ Oakhill Wood Class Newsletter Spring 1 – January 2019 Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome back! We hope you have enjoyed the lovely, relaxing Xmas holidays. The children have settled back into school last week and are ready for their new learning and challenges. Tuckshop Tuck shop is very popular with the children and is held every Friday in the school hall. If you would like your child to buy one of the healthy snacks, please send them in with 40p in a named envelope. Curriculum Our topic this term is ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ We will be learning about the solar system and the names of the planets. We will also be learning about Neil Armstrong and his journey to the moon. We will be doing lots of work in English based around the book ‘Jennifer Jones’s Space Car’. Learning opportunities will include:- Maths – Consolidation of multiplication and division, Money-Recognise coins and solve problems involving money, Statistics (recording and presenting data and problem solving) and properties of shape. English – Talk for Writing ‘Jennifer Jones’s Space Car’. Retelling the story, describing characters, innovating the story, identifying rhyming words, questions, use of capital letters and full stops. The children will then use these ideas to create their own space story. Science – Seasonal Changes (Winter) - * Observe changes across 4 seasons Observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies Everyday Materials – Distinguish between the object and what it’s made from /Identify and name a variety of everyday materials. Describe the simple physical properties of materials Compare and group together a variety everyday materials based on their physical characteristics Working Scientifically - Identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials. What would we need to make a rocket? History: Significant People/Events – The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. (Neil Armstrong) Geography Identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK (linked to Science) Look at what Earth looks like from space. Name and locate the world’s seven continents and oceans. P.E Days Our Year 1 and Year 2 children will do P.E on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school all week. All clothing should be labelled with their name. Please remember that all children require a tracksuit and trainers as one of their P.E lessons is generally outside. Throughout the colder months, the children will continue to have access to the outdoor learning areas. Please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor wear, including wellies, a warm coat and waterproofs. Homework Children will continue to receive their spelling sentences on a Friday and will be given reading books to be read at home as normal. Please try as much as you can to listen to your child read. Reading has such an impact on all areas of learning. Year 2 children will also be sent home with some extra ‘Maths’ practise to consolidate things that they are doing in lessons. Dates to Note 23rd Jan- Parent’s Evening 24th Jan- Parent’s Evening Wednesday 30th January – ‘Space Day’ in school for Sherwood and Oakhill class.
