1 Tracking Your Service Hours
Getting credit the first time!

2 First things First What is Service Learning or Community Service?
Community Service refers to service that a person performs for the benefit of his or her local community. Step outside of your familiar environments and expand your horizons. What it is not? It is not something you are paid for It is not helping a family member or a parent’s business It is not something that only benefits you Classes, Summer of a Lifetime, Internships Service done in the school does not count towards your CS Only exception is for the NHS scholars.

3 Why Community Service? It exposes you to new opportunities and new experiences that you may not normally have It makes your city and community a better place Colleges value students who are involved in their community You can get real world experience that employers will value when you start looking for jobs

4 Community Service at Muchin
How many hours? Freshman – 10 hours total 5 hours per semester Sophomores – 30 hours total 10 hours per semester Juniors – 60 hours total 15 hours per semester Seniors – 100 hours total 20 hours per semester

Ambassadors Remember you are representing MCP when you are in the community Treat those you meet respectfully Dress in Muchin appropriate clothing Not too tight Not revealing Appropriate for the type of volunteering you are doing. Be gracious to the people you meet and work with.

6 Logging Your Hours and Getting credit
The Process: Do your hours Blog about your hours on Weebly (or another free blog site) Post your hours on Youtopia!!

7 Blogging on Weebly For best results blog the same day or the next day so the experience is fresh in your mind. If you volunteer at a location multiple times a week, you only need to write one blog for each week you volunteer. (Up to 20 hours at a time) This is a record of what you did, make sure it’s done well.

8 Weebly Blog Expectations
One-time or Once/Week Volunteer Activities. Blog should be 200 words (minimum) Blog should be grammatically correct Pick a memorable experience you had on the trip and write about it in detail OR explain why your service was needed and how it will help the community (or both!!) Multi-Day Volunteer Activities (for same organization) Blog 1 time/request; No request can be for more than 20 hours Blogs should be 200 words long for every 10 hours you worked. All other requirements are the same

9 The Weebly Site Go to www.weebly.com and create an account.
You should use your Muchin to create this account

10 Creating Your Blog When you create an account you will be brought to this screen Select the BLOG option.

11 Creating Your Blog Select a Theme that you think you will like
Then make sure you choose SUBDOMAIN OF WEEBLY or you will be asked to pay.

12 Creating your Blog Watch the Tutorial Video that pops up so you know h0w to structure your site. Before your first submission Click PUBLISH so that your website is live. You will need to select the Subdomain of Weebly option again

13 Starting your First Blog
You can change the name here by going to Settings Click on “New Post” To start your submission

14 Blog Submission Appearance
Check out the sample blog found online at: mcpblogsample.weebly.com/ This is a sample and yours doesn’t have to look identical but it does need to meet the following: Title should include the site that you did the service at You should include the date this is the day you did the service!! Not the day you wrote the blog! Every reflection should be unique and new. No matter how similar the experience is you CANNOT simply copy and paste an old reflection. General rule: 1 Youtopia Submission = 1 Reflection

15 Creating your Blog When you have completed your blog. Click on the Publish Live button for the blog each time otherwise it is saved as a Draft and I won’t be able to see it. This is the website that you need to include in your Youtopia submission.

17 Using Youtopia Watch this 6 minute tutorial on Youtopia
We will no longer be requesting individual sites, but rather will be posting based on cause. If you don’t know what cause your service is helping that is a problem and you should find out!

18 The first time you login to Youtopia follow these steps:
Using Youtopia The first time you login to Youtopia follow these steps: Type in your Muchin Click the space that says “I forgot my password” Go to your Muchin and reset your password to something you will remember If this does not work you need to Ms. Rouse (only for Youtopia)

If you don’t see your “Cause” listed below please reach out to me and we will see if a new category should be added OR if another does work for you. 20 Using Youtopia 1. Enter the day and time you started the hours; the ended at time will auto fill based on your hours 2. Enter the number of hours you did 3. Include the link to your blog Scholar followed Multi-Day Submission Format, Scholar included where they worked, their supervisor and a contact number (or ) Milwaukee County Zoo Lisa Guigelliemi

21 And you are Done! Ms. Rouse will you if there are issues with your submission or any questions. You must submit your hours 2 weeks after the date you completed your hours.
