Geographic Settlement FYROM is a country in Southeast Europe. It is one of the succesor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. 4 RELIEF The relief of FYROM is characterized by large and high mountain massifs giving way to extensive, flat valleys and plains. The valleys are interconnected by low passes or deep ravines, such as those of Derven, Taor, Veles, Demir Kapija and Ciganska Klisura on river Vardar, and Kresna and Rupel on river Strumica. Macedonia is a predominantly mountainous country. Macedonia's high mountains are suitable for winter sports and hunting.

5 FYROM AND the EU EU member country : FYROM negotiate for entry into the European Union Currency:  Macedonian denar(MKD) FYROM was identified as a potential candidate for EU membership during the Thessaloniki European Council summit in 2003.  Its Stabilisation and Association Agreement is in force since 2004, the first in the region. It applied for EU membership in March 2004 and the Council decided in December 2005 to grant the country candidate status, based on the Commission’s favorable opinion. Since October 2009, the Commission has recommended to open accession negotiations with the country, until 2015 when it made this conditional on continued implementation of the Pržino agreement and substantial progress in the implementation of the "Urgent Reform Priorities“. macedonia/index_en.htm

The most important cities in Macedonia are: - Skopje, the capital of the country - Bitola - Kumanovo - Prilep - Tetovo - Veles - Štip - Ohrid

16 TRADITIONAL FOOD Tavče gravče is considered the national dish of Macedonia It is prepared with fresh beans and it can be found in almost all restaurants in Macedonia and all over the Macedonian diaspora. It is served in traditional earthenware. Leek pie with cheese Turli Tava Turli tava (vegetable and meat stew) has its name origin in Turkish words turli (türlü in modern Turkish) meaning "mixed" and tava, a pottery dish. It is a common main course dish for Macedonia

17 Malidzano  is traditional Macedonian spread made from puréed eggplants, sirenje cheese, walnuts, garlic and spices. It derives its name from the Italian word for eggplant, melanzane. Malidzano is usually served as appetizer along with bread. Crêpe is a type of very thin pancake, usually made from wheat flour (crêpes de froment) or buckwheat flour (galettes ). Tulumba is a popular dessert found in the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire. It is a fried batter soaked in syrup, similar to jalebis and churros.

18 DAILY LIFE IN FYROM Domestic Unit. „ The traditional unit is extended family consisting of a married couple, their unmarried daughters, and their sons with their own spouses and children. This is becoming increasingly less common in urban areas. Children tend to live with their parents until they are married”.

19 Child Rearing and Education
Child Rearing and Education. „ Children are looked after by their mothers, grandmothers, neighbors, or older siblings. Children play freely at an early age. Boys are expected to be more active than girls. In urban areas there are also nursery schools and kindergartens. Eight-year elementary education is compulsory.” Higher Education. „ Society places a high value on higher education, but ethnic minorities are under-represented. Approximately 87 percent of those holding university degrees are ethnic Macedonians”
