1 Objects in Space Lesson 56

2 Activator Besides planets and stars, what are some other objects in space? List as many as you can. Winner receives a homework pass.

3 How Objects Travel in Space?
Things in space have inertia. (Travel in a straight line unless there is a force that makes them stop or change) Movement is influenced by gravity. Most objects on space tend to travel in orbits around the Sun or around planets. The orbits are usually close to circular, but are actually slightly flattened ellipses.

4 Comets   Comets contain dust, ice, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane and more. Core = ice and dusted coated with dark organic matter Bright ion tail Very large Visible form Earth Orbits the sun

5 Asteroid Comets without the ice Made up of dust, rock, and metal
The majority of the known asteroids in the Solar System orbit the Sun in a band between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This band is commonly referred to as the ___________________

6 Meteoroid vs Meteor vs Meteorite
Meteoroid: Solid rock mass in space   Meteor: Mass hits Earth’s atmosphere and becomes hot and flaming Meteorite: Solid space mass hits the ground Orbits the sun REMEMBER → ROID/R/RITE
