The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers 99% of the continent. In places, it is nearly 5km thick! It is the largest single mass of ice on Earth and it contains 90% of the world’s fresh water. If it were to melt, the world’s oceans would rise by 70 metres – enough to flood many of the world’s largest cities, including London.

14. Reasons for the Harsh Climate
Ocean Currents: Some areas of the world have warm ocean currents, and others have cool ocean currents. This is what causes the climates in costal areas.
Latitude: The closer a location is to the Equator, the warmer it is.
Angle of Insulation from the Sun: The angle of insulation that comes from the Sun determines how warm an area will be. This changes with the seasons. This also explains why the Poles will have 6 months of complete darkness and 6 months of complete light.
