1 Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Warm Up Agenda Warm Up Stopwatch activity
Left side Agenda Warm Up Stopwatch activity Speed of a Marble Lab Lab Analysis/ Q&A Warm Up (copy in your notebook) How do we increase the height of the ramp? How many trials do we do for each ramp height? What is the distance the marble will travel?

2 Announcements Thursday: 2pm dismissal; Parent Conferences (5:30p); BIG QUIZ; ISN CHECK! Friday: Practice & Review; MTV car due! Monday (10/31): Acceleration; V-T graphs; Unit Review Tuesday: Acceleration; V-T graphs Wednesday: Position & Speed graphs Thursday: Quiz Friday: Forces 2

10 Lab 2 - Speed of a Marble Question: How does the steepness of a ramp affect the speed of a marble? Hypothesis/Prediction: If …. then … Materials: Marble, Ramp, Stop Watch, Calculator, metric ruler

11 Procedure 1. Set the track on height one and measure the height in centimeters. Record data. 2. Place the marble at the beginning of the track on top. 3. Let go of the marble & start the timer when the marble crosses the first line. 4. Stop the timer when the marble reaches the second line. Record data.

12 Procedure 5. Repeat 3 more times to gather a total of 4 trials for this height. 6. Increase height of ramp by adding one book. Repeat 1-6 until complete.

13 Pre-Lab Questions What is the formula for speed?
If the marble travels a distance of 40 cm in 4 seconds, what is its speed? What is the average speed of a marble if the measured speeds from 4 different trials are the following: 10 cm/s, 9.9 cm/s, cm/s, 9.78 cm/s

14 Data Chart distance = 100 cm

15 Create a graph Calculate AVERAGE SPEED of the marble at each ramp height. Use the speed formula (s = d ÷ t) Make a bar graph showing your results Make an inference about the speed of the marble if you used 6 books? 7 books? 8 books?

16 average speed Height of ramp (cm)

17 Post-Lab Questions What was difficult about this lab?
What are some possible sources of ERROR in your experiment? What was easy about this lab? What happened as you increased the height of the ramp?

18 P-T graphs P-T graphs are graphs that show POSITION and TIME of an object. They are also called DISTANCE-TIME graphs These show the distance an object has moved in a given amount of time

19 motion speed velocity acceleration Match the terms
the rate that speed or direction changes change in position measured by distance & time the rate at which an object moves the speed & direction of a moving object

20 P-T graphs (x&y axes)

21 P-T graph (object at rest)

22 P-T graph

24 P-T graph (speeding up)
0 sec P-T graph (speeding up) 4 3 1 2 meters

25 P-T graph (summary)

26 Facts & Figures Page 56: Figure 8 Draw the figure and answer the question above it. Page 57: Figure 9 Draw the figure and tell how far the car went in 8 seconds. Page 60: Figure 11 Draw the figure and give 2 other examples of acceleration. Define the 7 vocabulary words in the yellow box on page 56.
