1 Characteristics of the P table “neighborhoods”
I will pass out new blank p-tables for these notes

2 Metals DUCTILE (able to be drawn out into a thin wire)
Metals are: DUCTILE (able to be drawn out into a thin wire) MALEABLE (able to be pressed or hammered permanently without breaking or cracking) GOOD CONDUCTORS OF HEAT GOOD CONDUCTORS OF ELECTRICITY

3 Transition metals DUCTILE MALEABLE GOOD CONDUCTORS OF HEAT
GOOD CONDUCTORS OF ELECTRICITY Have high melting and boiling points. Called transition metals because they are the elements on the p table that are transitioning into bonding using their D orbitals

4 Metalloids Possess some of the qualities of metals and some qualities of non-metals. Often good semi-conductors A semi conductor has electrical conductivity somewhere in between a great conductor like copper and an insulator, like glass. Semi conductors are at the foundation of modern electronics – an understanding of them has enabled us to make faster and more complex microprocessors and memory devices.

5 Non-metals Carbon Sulfur

6 Non-metals Poor conductors of heat and electricity
Dull, brittle solids Most gasses at room temp Low Density Low Melting point Not Malleable Not Ductile Like to react with metals
