1 Total/Net Ionic Equations

2 In chemistry, we work with balanced chemical equations:
ex. sodium sulphate reacts with calcium chloride in a double displacement reaction to give you calcium sulphate and sodium chloride

3 Na2SO4(aq) + CaCl2(aq)  CaSO4(s) + 2NaCl(aq)
Recall…what happened to NaCl in water? Soluble ionic compounds form an “ion soup”:

4 Total ionic equation illustrates the separation of soluble ionic compounds into their respective ions ex. balanced chemical equation: Na2SO4(aq) + CaCl2(aq)  CaSO4(s) + 2NaCl(aq) total ionic equation: 2 Na+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + Ca Cl-  CaSO4(s) + 2Na+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq)

5 Net ionic equation shows only the ions involved in the chemical reaction ex. total ionic: 2 Na+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + Ca2+ + 2Cl-  CaSO4(s) + 2Na+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) net ionic: SO42-(aq) + Ca2+  CaSO4(s)

6 ions that do not participate in the reaction are called “spectator ions”
ex. Na+, Cl-
