Thanks for inviting me to Sunday School today. 1) PLAY Greet 1) SAY I am James, your computer teacher for this morning. 1) PLAY Explain 1) SAY This month we’re talking about how we can live in ways that please God. When we please God, we’re living the life that’s best and happiest for ourselves, as well.. 1) PLAY Suggest SLIDE 3 = 1) SAY Today we’ll learn how another Old Testament personality, Daniel, lived to please God by choosing God’s way. He was taken captive by King {Nebukad nezzer=Nebuchadnezzar}, almost 600 years before Jesus was born, and deported to the city of Babylon. PLAY Read SAY The history of Daniel is found in the book of Daniel in the Bible. PLAY ReadContinued SAY The action of today’s story is recorded in Daniel, chapter 1, verses 1 through 17. NEXT PLAY LookUpLeftBlink SAY But Jerusalem, the capital of Judah, was conquered in 587 BC by Babylon. PLAY Explain SAY {Nebukad nezzer=Nebuchadnezzar}, the king of Babylon, invaded Jerusalem, captured the King of Israel, and took valuable items from God’s temple. PLAY Alert SAY He told his chief official, Ashpenaz, to bring the finest young people from Judah to the city of Babylon. PLAY RestPose SLIDE 5 = SAY There they would be given special treatment and enter a three-year training program. They would then enter the king’s \emp\ service.

5 ^*#{}#*^ MOVE 75,50 PLAY LookRight SAY Among the boys brought to Babylon were Daniel, Hananiah, {Mih-shael=Mishael}, and Azariah. PLAY Explain SLIDE 6= SAY They were sent to school to learn the language and literature of Babylon. Their names were also changed to names honoring Babylonian gods.

PLAY RestPose SAY And Azariah was named {Abed nihgo=Abednego}. PLAY Think SAY You may remember the story of Daniel’s friends, Shadrach, {Me-shack=Meshack}, and {Abed nihgo=Abednego} in the {firey=fiery} furnace. SLIDE 7 = SAY But that comes later in the book of Daniel.

7 ^*#{}#*^ MOVE 45,55 SAY As part of the program, the boys were to be given special treatment. PLAY LookUp SAY They were to be fed with the rich foods from the king’s own table. PLAY Decline SLIDE 8 = SAY But Daniel knew that this food was not right for him, and he decided not to eat it. God had given the Israelites laws about what to eat.

PLAY LookRight SAY Some of the rules about Kosher foods are: NEXT SAY Some foods, such as pork, were not to be eaten at all. SAY When an animal was slaughtered for meat, it was done in a special way so that all the blood would be drained from the carcass. SLIDE 9 = SAY And meat and milk were not to be cooked or eaten together.

PLAY Explain SAY Ashpenaz liked Daniel and wanted to help him, but he was afraid of what the king might say. PLAY Confused SAY Suppose he brought the food they requested, and they became ill? PLAY Sad SLIDE 10 = SAY The king might put him to death.

10 ^*#{}#*^ MOVE 45,55 PLAY Explain SAY Daniel requested, Please bring us vegetables and water for ten days, then compare us to the other young men who eat the king’s food. PLAY RestPose SLIDE 11 = SAY The official agreed. For ten days Daniel and his friends ate vegetables and drank water while the others ate the king’s food and wine.

11 ^*#{}#*^ MOVE 55,40 PLAY Pleased SAY At the end of this time, Daniel and his friends were healthier and better nourished than all the others! They continued to eat the right food. PLAY Explain SLIDE 12 = SAY God blessed these young men, made them wise, and helped them to learn. To Daniel, God gave the special gift of interpreting dreams.

12 ^*#{}#*^ MOVE 45,45 PLAY Explain SAY Just as God had rules for the Israelites, God has rules that apply to us today. PLAY DoMagic1 SAY Some foods and other things are better for us than others, and some things (like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs) are really very harmful to our bodies. SAY Other things are all right in moderation, but we shouldn’t {over-do=overdo} them. Sometimes we must choose between what’s good and what’s best. PLAY Alert SAY To live in ways that please God, we must care for the bodies God has given us. Of course, this is best for us, too.
