1
Biodiversity within plant based communities
2
By the end of this session you will:
Describe how you can investigate plant populations including estimating population number Outline to a variety of ways in which biodiversity can be determined including Simpson’s Index of Biodiversity Identify advantages/disadvantages of these measurements of Biodiversity
3
How do we know where to place the quadrat each time?
So How can we estimate the number of individuals within a plant population? How do we know where to place the quadrat each time? Identify the plant species and number of each within a quadrat x10 Use two tape measures as axis from 0 to 10 metres on each giving us an area of 100m2
4
What do we need to consider?
Validity Reliability Concordance and anomalies Limitations
5
So what is Biodiversity?
6
How can we measure biodiversity?
Species richness Species evenness
7
So why is Simpson’s Index of Biodiversity a better indication of Biodiversity?
Link summarising Simpson's Index of Biodiversity IMPORTANT It is not the formula or which formula you are given, it is how to interpret the values from 0 to 1 that you need to get your head around
