Sir Walter Raleigh sent by Elizabeth I When he returned the colony was gone.

3 Jamestown, 1607 Characteristics of the settlers
Located in a marshy and humid local. Disease almost wiped them out. Saved by tobacco John Smith / Pocahontas/ John Rolfe

4 First Slaves Arrive 1619 At the same time as women
British were making $$$$$$$ from the slave trade.

5 Plymouth, 1620 Characteristics of the settlers
A group of religious Separatists known as Pilgrims. Had to rely on help from the Native Americans

6 Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1629
Founded by Puritans “City on a Hill” where the will of God would be manifested. Religious dissent was not tolerated in this colony. Those thrown out founded the other New England colonies

7 Salem Witch Trials Demonstrated the social conflict present in the American colonies.
