1 Crafting a thesis Introduction

2 What is a Thesis Statement?
A thesis statement is the controlling idea for your paper.   It will usually include the main idea you wish to communicate and your position toward the idea. Your thesis statement will be the framework for your essay and the foundation for the evidence you will provide. There must be an element of opinion in your statement. A thesis is arguable.

3 How to develop a solid thesis
The topic - unwanted teen pregnancy The main point, purpose, or argument - incidence can be reduced The how or why of the purpose or argument - by providing support for abstinence programs, increasing funding for sex education, and making contraceptives more accessible to teens Example of a well-developed thesis: The incidence of unwanted teen pregnancies can be reduced by providing support for abstinence programs, increasing funding for sex education, and making contraceptives more accessible to teens.

4 Sample thesis statements to consider
Strong Weak Reasons Richard J. Daley died in 1976. Artists of Chicago: Before Title IX, there were few female basketball players.   Pesticides kill thousands of farmworkers and must be stopped. German immigrants in Chicago had enormous difficulties during World War One as they were forced to choose between being “German and an enemy” or forsaking Germany to be “American”. Is it clear what the project will be about? Is it arguable? Is there something that has to be proven? Will research be necessary to prove the thesis? Is there only one main idea?

5 How do I write a Thesis Statement?
Start with a Research Question. What do you want to find out about? Some examples are below. Notice how each question would take some research to answer Why was Thomas Jefferson opposed to slavery? What happened to the Juvenile Court system to bring it to the crisis point? Research enough to be able to take a stand. Add your opinion about the topic. What is the issue or concern? Make sure it’s arguable. Even though Thomas Jefferson had slaves, he showed that he valued every human being in his words and actions. The Juvenile Court system was established to remove children from the adult criminal justice system and help youth reform, but over the years it became a source of punishment and imprisonment.
