2 Cycles of Matter Unlike the one-way flow of energy, matter is recycled within and between ecosystems. - water and carbon cycle

3 What is the Water Cycle? continuous process by which water moves from Earth’s surface (ground) to the atmosphere and back to the Earth’s surface

The Sun heats up the water in Earth’s oceans and lakes.

1. Evaporation: liquid water changes to a gas (water vapor)

2. Transpiration: water vapor is released by plants.

3. Condensation: Water vapor changes back into liquid, forming clouds.  Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds.

4. Precipitation: Water vapor condenses and heavy droplets fall as rain, snow, sleet, or hail

11 The precipitation that falls on the land will soak into the soil and become groundwater or run off the land, flowing back into the ocean to occur again.
