1 How Did the Early People Get to Texas
4th grade

2 TEKS (1) History. The student understands the origins, similarities, and differences of American Indian groups in Texas and North America before European exploration. The student is expected to: (A) explain the possible origins of American Indian groups in Texas and North America;

3 What is MIGRATION? Migration is the movement from one place to another. Early Prehistoric people were NOMADS, these people followed the food supply in order to survive.

4 The BERING STRAIT This is a landbridge called a strait connecting the Pacific and Arctic oceans between Russia and the US state of Alaska.

5 When lower ocean levels – perhaps a result of glaciers locking up vast amounts of water – exposed a wide stretch of the sea floor. This is the most accepted how Paleo- Indians entered America.

6 I can explain the ways people might of arrived in Texas.
When did this happen? This happened about 15,000 years ago (around the time period of 13,500 BC)

7 Following the food for hundreds of year they eventually end up in Texas.

8 Where did they live? Since these people were always on the move they did not have permanent shelters. They built temporary homes from the resources they found around them.

9 How did they get their food?
These people were hunters and gatherers. This means they gathered berries and other plants to eat and they also hunted mammals and fished for food.

10 Hunting The hunters used tools made from stones and sticks they found. As the years went on the tools became better and better.

11 Gatherers There was not always animals available to hunt. Many times these people gathered berries, nuts, and other plants to eat.

12 How Do We Know How These People Lived?
They left evidence of their lifestyle. Rock art that shows pictures of how they lived. Many stone tools have also been found. Archaeologists have uncovered camp sites and dug up evidence.

16 Assignment In your accordion book create a series of pictures with captions that explain how the early people of Texas arrived here and survived. Be sure to use lots of color and write complete sentences for each picture.
