Currents move long distances in Earths Oceans.
There are 4 types of ocean currents.

Warm currents – flow away from the equator
Cool currents – flow from the poles

5. The gulf stream
The gulf stream is a warm ocean current in the Atlantic ocean.
It flows northeast along the eastern coast of the U.S.

The gulf stream moves warm waters out across the Atlantic ocean, then toward the north.
The gulf stream helps keep weather along the eastern coast milder by warming the air and land there during the cooler months.

Radiation from the sun warms the waters of the gulf stream, as well as the other warm water currents.

9. The gulf stream Then by convection, the water warms the air above it.
The warmed air in turn warms the coastal land over which it moves.
