The international Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) science community is very active

4. SWARM SWARM Three satellites in low-Earth, polar orbit
Main science objective is magnetometry
The mission is at the end of phase B, launch expected in 2011
Instruments:
High-precision vector and scalar magnetometers (Denmark/France)
Accelerometers (Slovakia?)
Ion drift probes (Canada)
We failed to get energetic particle spectrometers accepted
The mission can do some ILWS-related science – but we missed the opportunity to do much more.

5. New ITM mission opportunities: ASIM
ASIM – The Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor
ASIM is for the International Space Station (altitude ~400km; inclination ~51.6o)
Main science objective is studies of thunderstorms and electrical discharges
The mission is in Phase B
Instrumentation:
6 TV-frame rate imagers
2 nadir (337nm; nm)
4 limb (337nm, 391.4nm, nm; 762nm)
6 photometers
2 nadir (337nm, nm)
4 limb (337nm, 391.4nm, nm; 237nm)
one X-ray monitor

6. Proposed ASIM add-ons Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT)
Protons: 4 MeV – 200 MeV
Electrons: 0.2 – 10 MeV
Proposed by:
Cyamukungu et al., Center for Space Radiations, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
Sprite Imaging and Chemistry (SPICY)
Imaging grating spectrometer ( nm; nm; nm)
Builds on SCHIAMACY heritage (Envisat), and GOME satellite
Proposed by
Weber et al., Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen, Germany
The proposed instruments would allow studies of energetic particle precipitation and associated modifications to atmospheric chemistry.
Funding must be identified by the end of ASIM phase B
Both countries are partners in the International Space Station collaboration
