1 ECOZONES AND THE REGIONS OF CANADA
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

2 WHAT IS A REGION? A region is an area which has similar characteristics or features that can be sorted.. For example: Landforms Climate Vegetation Soil Human Activity

3 Canada is such a large and diverse country, that detailed organization of information is needed.
One way that geographers organize this information is by creating regions.

4 WHAT IS AN ECOZONE? Ecozones are large regions where living things such as, people and the physical environment work together as a system. The study of ecozones looks at how human activities interact with the natural environment within a particular region.

5 WHY ARE ECOZONES CREATED?
Ecozones are used to study the interaction between human activities and the natural environment within a particular region. There are both terrestrial (land) and maritime (water) ecozones. For our study, we will be focusing on the terrestrial ecozones.

7 WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Ecozones help us with: Where to build cities
Transportation routes Agriculture (growing seasons, soil types, drainage, etc.) …and much more!

8 ECOZONES AND YOU! Use the maps on the next pages to help!
Throughout this part of the unit, you will be working with a partner as you create a package of information to present to the class about your ecozone! Your ecozone will highlight a variety of human elements (e.g. resources, settlements, etc.) as well as the physical elements of: Landforms Climate Soil Vegetation Use the maps on the next pages to help!
