1 Different Habitats 4th Grade Anna Wilson

2 What are Habitats? Habitats are the environmental area where plants, animals, and organisms live. It is the physical environments that surrounds and influences. They are the area that plants, animals, and organisms normally live. Factors that characterize a habitat are soil, moisture, range of temperature, light, food, and predators. Also, plant structure, leaf type, plant spacing, and climate are used to determine a specific habitat. The different habitats that we will cover are: grasslands (or savanna), temperate forest, tropical rain forest, desert, and polar ice.

3 Where are the different habitats…

4 Objectives of the Lesson
The object of this lesson is for the students to learn about different habitats. Each group will be given a different habitat to research. They will research the climate, land forms, animal and plant life, temperature, and special characteristics about the habitat. The students will look at how the plants and animals are conducive to their living environment. They will then create a poster that outlines the habitat. A rubric will be used to grade the students on their findings.

5 How to get started with the lesson..
Day 1: I will take a poll of what all the students know. After listening to their answers, we will read a section in the book that briefly describes the different habitats. A video clip will be shown to incorporate visual learning. They will be given homework to go home and read the section in the book. Day 2: Students will be broken up into groups to research about their assigned habitat. They will fill out a worksheet of information about the habitat. They will be given the whole class period to complete the work sheet and brain storm on their poster. Day 3: The student will create a poster using the information from their worksheet. They will draw, copy, or paste pictures of their findings. They must include a variety of images and descriptions of the habitat Day 4: The students will present their posters to the class and explain their habitat.

6 The Videos … The students will watch the following videos…
The videos will incorporate technology into the lesson. They will also provide useful information and pictures about the different habitats. Including videos and images into a lesson is beneficial for both the student and the teacher. Visual images create valuable discussion for the lesson being taught.

7 The Worksheet

8 Where the students will find the answers…
Depending on the habitat, they will use the following websites to find answers to the questions… Tundra biomes: Grassland Biomes: Temperate Forest Biomes: Topical Rainforest Biomes: Desert Biomes: Polar Ice Biomes: Students will also use google images to find pictures of their habitats

9 Ruberic…

10 Student Reactions… The students will really enjoy this lesson. I have completed several lessons that incorporate technology (ipads, and computers) into answering worksheets. They must this take the information they find and create a poster to represent the habitat. This lesson can be cross curriculum. Science, social studies, math, and language arts will all be incorporated into the lesson. The students will learn basic research tools to learn how to research on the internet. They will be monitored in the computer lab and given specific websites that they can use to find the information. The students will progress as the year continues. This means that by the end of the year they will learn how to find the websites on their own.
