1 Energy

2 Energy Definition Ability to cause change in a system
Can be stored by systems in a variety of ways Can be transferred between systems Units: Joule (J), calorie, Calorie BTU Start two column notes:

3 Law of Conservation of Energy:
The total energy of a “closed system” remains constant. “Closed system”: no energy enters or leaves the system

4 Kinetic Energy Energy of motion of the system
Depends upon mass and velocity Velocity has a bigger affect than mass on energy level KE=1/2 mv2 Recall cup lab results

5 Potential Energy: energy due to the position of the system
Usually involves the presence of a “field” “Field”: involves the interaction of two masses, magnets, or charges

6 Energy formulas: KE = ½ mv2 GPE = mgh

7 Sound Energy A form of mechanical energy produced when molecules of air move as sound waves

8 Solar Energy Radiant energy that we harness from the sun.
Radiant heat from the sun is what keeps the Earth warm.

9 Electrical Energy Energy from moving electric charges
Includes electricity and magnetism

10 Chemical Energy Batteries Food Fuels
The type of energy stored in molecules. It can be released in chemical reactions. Examples include: Batteries Food Fuels

11 Nuclear Energy Comes from splitting an atom or fusing two atoms together. Nuclear energy is used in nuclear power plants to make electricity. It is used in medicine to diagnose disease and to treat cancer.

12 Thermal Energy Energy in the form of heat
