Jefferson Defeats Adams
Although Adams ran as Jefferson’s main opponent, running mates Jefferson and Burr received the same number of electoral votes. Jefferson and Burr made a deal: if Burr was willing to be Jefferson’s Vice President, Burr’s votes would swing to Jefferson in the House.

The Third President of the United States
Thomas Jefferson became President and Aaron Burr became Vice President. The deadlock in this election revealed a flaw – Congress passed he 12th amendment, calling for electors to pass separate ballots for president and vice president.

Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly acquired lands and to find a water route to the Pacific. Reached the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean Encouraged U.S. desire to acquire land connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
