1 Gandhi DBQ

2 Intro Paragraph 1 Grabber: Violence is not the answer. (Explain Time Place & Story): In the past cultures have had a hard time getting along. In the cases of Gandhi, Mandela, and Dr. King their country’s had issues of racial and class inequality. They used peaceful protest to gain equality. What made nonviolent protest work? It worked because leaders were willing to break unjust laws, the followers maintained discipline, and they embraced their enemies to change their minds.

3 Paragraph 2 RACES 1st toe – Bucket A – Docs 1-5
(Topic Sentence): Leaders and protestors were willing to be locked up. In Doc 4 Dr. King recalled how people were in a “holiday spirit” because they no longer feared being locked up. The people were no longer scared because they believed in the cause of freedom and they were willing to face jail time. In the end, the protestors were willing to sacrifice their temporary freedom for a chance at equality.

4 Paragraph 3 RACES 2nd toe – Bucket B – Docs 6,7
Nonviolence worked because people were willing to remain disciplined. Although Gandhi was jailed people continued to protest nonviolently, like at Dharasana when protestors were beaten and they did not even try to block the blows (Doc 6). Since these men were protesting peacefully and cameras and reporters saw how they were beaten so brutally it made Britain look bad in the eyes of the world. So, this form of resistance worked because the people never fought back and they looked like victims to the world.

5 Paragraph 4 RACES 2nd toe – Bucket c – Docs 8,9
Nonviolence worked because the leaders and protestors embraced the enemy in an attempt to change their minds. The picture in Doc 9 shows two hands, one white and one black, in one glove that reads: “South Africa’s New Democracy”. This picture shows how many members of the ANC, including Mandela felt, they had to work together to create a more equal society. In conclusion, people realized that they had to work together regardless of race because they were all in the same society together.

6 Conclusion paragraph 5 Although not all of the leaders used nonviolence every time, like Mandela, it was a successful tactic. (Restate thesis): Peaceful protest worked because leaders were willing to break unjust laws, the followers maintained discipline, and they embraced their enemies to change their minds. Mandela, Gandhi, and King were all leaders that people could look to find inspiration for them to remain discipline and embrace their enemies. (Or some kind of summary of what you have learned.)
