2 -A possible answer or explanation for a question based on research
Common Meaning: -A guess Scientific meaning: -A possible answer or explanation for a question based on research -Create before the experiment -Test your hypothesis in an experiment to see if it will be supported or rejected -More likely to be rejected than supported Like many words in the English Language

4 Theory--Common Meaning: -contemplation or speculation.
-guess or conjecture. Theory--Scientific Meaning: - set of related hypotheses confirmed to be true many times, and can explain a great amount of data -As close to 100% that we can get in science!!! Ex. Cell theory, gravitational theory Like many words in the English Language

5 A hypothesis does not turn into a theory if it’s supported

6 Each is a hypothesis that was tested and supported
Hypotheses Supported by Experiments to form Cell Theory Each is a hypothesis that was tested and supported The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living organisms. All cells arise from pre-existing cells by division. Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) occurs within cells. Cells contain hereditary information (DNA) which is passed from cell to cell during cell division. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition in organisms of similar species. All known living things are made up of one or more cells. Some organisms are made up of only one cell and are known as unicellular organisms. Others are multi-cellular, composed of a number of cells. The activity of an organism depends on the total activity of independent cells.

7 Its just a theory, not a fact!

using hypothesis and theory correctly:

9 Hypothesis vs. Theory Theory: An explanation that is supported by reasoning, many observations, many experiments (10’s, 100’s, 1000’s) and is highly tested. Hypothesis: A proposed scientific explanation based on observations that can be tested. Complete the T chart Don’t copy down but use to state similarities and differences Similarities Differences
