Breakthrough Prayer Conference Praying in the Power of the Spirit Breakthrough Prayer Conference April 9, 2005 Patrick Henry College Praying in the Power of the Spirit Bruce Newell Rear Admiral USN (Ret)

2 Session I You Shall Receive Power
Introduction Good to be here! God loves Breakthrough! Fellowship of the Holy Spirit Ephesians 6:18 18Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.

3 You Shall Receive Power
Romans 8:26-27 26And the Holy Spirit helps us in our distress. For we don’t even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

4 You Shall Receive Power
Breakthrough Prayer Conference Praying in the Power of the Spirit You Shall Receive Power Conference Overview Who is the Holy Spirit? How does He help us pray? What do we do to keep on praying? “God raises up prayer warriors and he equips that one, or those few, with his Holy Spirit to pray.”

5 You Shall Receive Power
The Holy Spirit and Me Key Concept Surrender One pace to the left Oswald Chambers: “Seek the Lord” Oswald Chambers wrote it this way: God wants you in a closer relationship to Himself than receiving His gifts, He wants you to get to know Him… There is nothing easier than getting into a right relationship with God except when it is not God whom you want, but only what He gives.

6 You Shall Receive Power
You say, “I did ask God for the Holy Spirit, but He did not give me the rest and peace I expected.” Instantly, God puts His finger on the reason – you are not seeking the Lord at all, you are seeking something for yourself… Are you seeking great things for yourself? “O Lord,” you say, Baptize me in the Holy Ghost.” If God does not, it is because you are not abandoned enough to Him – there is something you will not do. Are you prepared to ask yourself what it is you want from God and why you want it?

7 You Shall Receive Power
You can have a Powerful prayer life. “I lay at your feet all that is important to me and allow you to move in my life. Manifest yourself in me and my life and through me, in whatever way you choose.”

8 You Shall Receive Power
Who is the Holy Spirit? Nicene Creed: Third member of the Trinity We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. Before After One Place Anywhere One Moment Forever Outside Us Inside Us

9 You Shall Receive Power
Power for Prayer Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. John 14:6 The Holy Spirit will teach us. John 14:26 You pray! The Holy Spirit convicts. John 16:8-11

10 You Shall Receive Power
It is to your advantage! Family Membership “those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” Rom 8:14-17

11 You Shall Receive Power
Family Connections “For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household.” Eph 2:18-19 Family Likeness “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Gal 5:22-23

12 You Shall Receive Power
Family Wealth “And now dear brothers and sisters, I will write about the special abilities the Holy Spirit gives to each of us, for I must correct your misunderstandings about them.” 1 Cor 12:1 “There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” 1 Cor 12:5-7

13 You Shall Receive Power
Family Unity “My prayer for all of them is that they will be one, just as you and I are one, Father – that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me.” Jn 17:21 Family Purpose “But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

14 You Shall Receive Power
Conclusion Why do I need the Holy Spirit? Because I get tired “He gives power to those who are tired and worn out.” Isa 40:31 Because I get tempted “At the time you are tempted, he will give you strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.” 1 Cor 10:13

15 You Shall Receive Power
Because I have a purpose to fulfill (Jesus said) “I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

16 You Shall Receive Power
Come and Drink “If you believe in me, come and drink! In the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within.” (when he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him…) Jn 7:38-39

17 Session II Rivers of Living Water
Introduction Review Ephesians 6:18 Who is the Holy Spirit? Surrender is the key

18 Rivers of Living Water Different strokes for different folks
Every Christian has the Spirit inside, but not every Christian is filled with the Spirit Acts 2:38; Eph 5:18 Some people were longing for the Holy Spirit Acts 1:8, 14 Some people were uninformed about the Holy Spirit Acts 19:1-6 Some people were open to the Holy Spirit Acts 8:14-19 Some people were closed to the Holy Spirit Acts 7:57, 58; 8:3; 9:1, 2, 17-18 Some people were surprised by the Holy Spirit Acts 10:40-46

19 Rivers of Living Water John 7:37-39
37On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

20 Rivers of Living Water The Holy Spirit and Me
What does the Holy Spirit do? Builds in us the character of Christ “ God decided that those who came to Him – should become like his Son…” Rom 8:29 The Character Traits of Jesus Godward Fruit Love Joy Peace Manward Fruit Patience Kindness Goodness Inward Fruit Faithfulness Gentleness Self-Control

21 Rivers of Living Water Fruit Rules All the fruit for every believer
Fruit bearing is not optional I Peter 1:15-16 You can’t do it on your own! Gal 5:17; John 14:5 Follow in every part of your life Gal 5:25 Obey the leading of the Holy Spirit Gal 5:16

22 Rivers of Living Water The Holy Spirit gives us gifts
Definition of Gifts of the Spirit A special ability given by Jesus through His Holy Spirit to every believer at their conversion to be used to minister to others and thus build up the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit Equips us with Gifts of Ministry To build up the body of Christ Eph 4:11-13 That we might need each other 1 Cor 12:20-21 For the common good of the Body of Christ 1 Cor 12:7

23 Rivers of Living Water The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Body
Every Christian is a minister. Eph 4:12 “To equip the saints for the work of ministry.” Every Christian receives supernatural gifts. Eph 4:7 “But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Natural skills may be supernaturally enhanced.

24 Rivers of Living Water The Holy Spirit Informs our Prayers
Pray as the Spirit leads: “But you, dear friends, must continue to build your lives on the foundation of your holy faith. And continue to pray as you are directed by the Holy Spirit.” Jude 20 The Spirit will direct prayer to the Father: “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” Rom 8:15

25 Rivers of Living Water The Spirit will direct prayer towards Jesus and his sacrifice: “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” Zec 12:10 Always pray in the Spirit’s power: “Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.” Eph 6:18

26 Rivers of Living Water The Spirit can open a direct channel to God:
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our distress. For we don’t even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.” Rom 8:26-27 “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” 1 Cor 14:15

33 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Our Response: “Put Me in Coach” Combustible Material, Oxygen, Heat = A Blaze Keeping the Fire Ablaze Fighting the Battle Staying Combustible

34 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Body Know your enemy. He hates prayer warriors. Satan is real. “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” 1 Jn 3:8 “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” 1 Jn 5:19

35 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
“I am sending you to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God…” Acts 26:17-18 “For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms.” Eph 6:12

36 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
“Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own.” Eph 6:13 “… stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the devil.” Eph 6:11 Satan’s Preferred Pathways… Cults, occult activity & false religions (1 Tim 4:1; 1 Jn 4:1-3) Imagination Behavior and addictions Places where Satan has been active When God is strongest When I am weakest

37 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Know Your Strength “Be strong with the Lord’s mighty power.” Eph 6:10 “Use every piece of God’s armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Eph 6:13

38 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Put on the full armor Belt ~ Truth Body armor ~ God’s righteousness Shoes ~ Peace from the Good News Shield ~ Faith Helmet ~ Salvation Sword ~ The Word of God “All Prayer” “Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.”

39 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Be Filled and Refilled Ask, seek, knock “…How much more will your heavenly Father give the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Lk 11:13 Share, pray, study, praise, obey, witness

40 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
A Prayer for Spiritual Warfare (Ephesians 6:10-20) Lord Jesus Christ, today I step forward to take up your battles. As I do so, I will be strong not in myself, but in your mighty power. I will put on every piece of your armor that I might be able to stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the Devil. For you have taught us that we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Make us alert to the dangers we must face.

41 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Today I take the sturdy belt of truth around my waist and the protection of your holiness on my chest. For shoes, I take the peace that comes from the Good News, so that I will be able to stand strong in every fight. I will take faith as my shield to stop the fiery arrows of doubt and temptation aimed at me by Satan. I will put on the assurance of salvation as my helmet. I take the sword of your Spirit, the Word of God, as my sword; I will read the Bible regularly, following its guidance and holding fast to its promises. I will pray hard and long under the leading of your Holy Spirit. I will pray for all my brothers and sisters, keeping alert and keeping each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.

42 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Finally, I pray that you would give me the right words and the boldness to speak to them as I witness to your Good News, no matter what the obstacles or difficulties, so that in every place your Gospel would triumph and your name would be glorified. Amen.

43 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Keep the Fire Ablaze Let the Spirit Lead You. Surrender Let go and let God. If Jesus is not Lord of All He is not Lord at all. The Holy Spirit has Magnitude (Power) and Direction. Don’t Resist, Quench, or Grieve the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will lead you in Ministry opportunities. “The Spirit told Phillip, ‘Go to that Chariot and stay near it.’” Acts 8:29 Exodus 31:3 Bezalel’s I God Given Talents

44 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
The Spirit will lead you into Battle with Satan. “Immediately the Holy Spirit compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness. He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan.” Mark 1:12-13 “Greater is He (Jesus) who is in you than he (Satan) who is in the world.” The Lamb wins!

45 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Keep On Walking Pray and Speak courageously “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Acts 9:31 Understand what God has given us. “We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.” 1 Cor 2:12

46 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Desire and Use Supernatural ministry gifts. “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.” 1 Cor 14:1 Grow a Character like Christ’s. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control.” Gal 5:22-23

47 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Conclusion The Power Full Prayer Warrior “Pray at all times and on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all Christians everywhere.” Eph 6:18 “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” 1 Co 14:15

48 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Do Not Be Afraid of the Darkness “ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” Ps 23 “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Eph 6:11 Stand Firm in your faith. Repeat to yourself what you believe. “I believe in God the Father Almighty…” Be Self-Controlled and Alert and Resist and the enemy will flee.

49 Keeping the Fire Ablaze
Remember the Truth “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.” Claim Victory and March Off “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.” Rom 12:1
