1 Winnington Park Primary School
Parent Reading Workshop November 8th 2017

2 What to do when a child ‘gets stuck’
Instead of giving them the word try a prompt… What could you try? Do you know a word like that? What do you think it could be? Do you know a word that starts with those letters? What do you know that might help? Read it all and come back to it. Use the punctuation to help you. Get your mouth ready for the first sound.

3 Other prompts You could also try… Read it with your finger.
Were there enough words? Point to each word as you read it. Try that again and think about what would make sense. Would _____ make sense? You said _____ but look at ______.

4 Specific praise Children can learn lots from specific praise rather than just ‘well done’ or ‘good’. So try… I like the way you… Well done, you went back and made it sound right. Great. You looked at the first letter That reading sounded very smooth I like the way you checked…

5 Comprehension Are the children understanding what they are reading?
Children need to develop skills of… Retrieval (finding words and phrases in text) Deduction, inference and interpreting (using the clues to work something out) Developing and justifying their own opinion (what do you think…?, why do you think that?).

6 The 3 little pigs Try asking things like… Which phrase does the wolf say again and again? -retrieval Why does the wolf want to blow down the houses? - Deduction, inference & Interpretation What makes this a good story? -Justifying opinion

7 Any questions? Over to you…
We are here to help you help your children 
