Matter definition Matter is anything that has a mass and takes up space. Examples:

8 Can you name anything that is not matter?

9 Write definitions for the following
Mass: How much something weighs, or the amount of matter in an object Common units: grams (g), kilograms (kg), pounds (lb), stones, tonnes Volume: How much space something takes up Common units: Litres (L), millilitres (mL), cm3, gallons

10 All matter can be considered to be in 3 phases:
Solids Liquids Gases Your desk Water Oxygen Pencil Milk Helium Glass Magma and lava Carbon dioxide Pillow Water vapour Your clothes Ice

11 Matter is composed of very tiny particles
Matter is composed of very tiny particles. They behave in different ways depending on the phases.

12 Describe the movement of particles in each of these phases:
Solids: The particles vibrate and hold their own shape. Liquids: The particles ”flow” among one another. They take the shape of their container. Gases: The particles move freely and quickly They expand to fill the container.

13 How can we go from one phase to another?
You can go from solid to liquid to gas by adding ENERGY (or heat). For example, if you apply heat to ice (solid), it will melt into water (liquid). If you keep applying heat, it will evaporate into water vapour.
