Sterling Middle School Counseling Department Vision Statement The diverse students of Sterling Middle School are meaningful contributors to society. Sterling Middle School Counseling Department Mission Statement The mission of the Sterling Middle School Counseling Department is to provide a proactive, comprehensive, developmentally appropriate counseling program to address all students' academic, career and personal/social needs. Through an engaging, caring environment, school counselors will support students in identifying personal strengths and passions that will allow them to thrive in a global society. What is this? The team is responsible for providing a continuum of prevention and intervention supports and services to address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students and to remove barriers to learning in the school environment. Counselors Social Worker School Psychologist Nurse Student Assistance Specialist Administration The team is responsible for providing a continuum of prevention and intervention supports and services to address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students and to remove barriers to learning in the school environment. School Counselor School Counselors are licensed educators with the minimum of a Master's degree in School Counseling who provide a wide-range of services to support the academic, career, and social/emotional development of all students. By designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program, School Counselors provide education, prevention, and intervention activities that seek to promote student achievement. School Counselors support the educational mission of the school and recognize our collaborative efforts with families, teachers, administrators, other support staff, and the community enhance student success. Services they provide include, but are not limited to: Academic advising and academic support services Career and college exploration and planning services Personal and social/emotional support services and referrals Individual and small group short-term, goal-focused counseling (we do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools) Collaboration and coordination of services needed within the school and through community agencies School crisis intervention and response services School Psychologist LCPS School Psychologists help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students. School Psychologists provide a variety of interventions and supports as part of the unified mental health teams.  They participate assist with the problem-solving process as part of child study teams.  They conduct psychological evaluations to determine eligibility for special education and 504 supports.  They also co-facilitate counseling groups to address issues such as healthy decision making, healthy relationships, anger and stress management, mindfulness, and social skills using evidence-based curriculum.  School psychologists serve on the county-wide crisis teams in responding to crises involving the school community.  They are also trained in the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale to screen for suicidal ideation.  Additionally, School Psychologists may be certified to provide a continuum of Restorative Practices as an intervention and prevention model to foster school connection, build community, develop emotional literacy and cultivate conflict resolutions skills.  School psychologists may serve as the external PBIS coach, helping to foster school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. School Psychologists provide prevention services including coordinating and presenting the SOS Signs of Suicide® High School Prevention Program in classrooms as part of the Loudoun County Public Schools' Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention program.  They also serve as adult advisers for the Sources of Strength, a universal suicide prevention program designed to build socioecological protective influences around youth and promote hope, help, and strength. School Social Worker School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals with a master’s degree in social work from a university accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and are licensed by the Virginia Department of Education. School Social Workers provide a variety of interventions and supports as part of the unified mental health teams.  They conduct socio-cultural assessments to determine eligibility for special education services.  They also co-facilitate counseling groups to address issues such as healthy decision making, healthy relationships, anger and stress management, mindfulness, and social skills using evidence-based curriculum.  School social workers serve on the county-wide crisis teams in responding to crises involving the school community.  They are also trained in the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale to screen for suicidal ideation.  School social workers also coordinate school-based and community support referrals to students and families in need.  School Social Workers support students receiving homebound services through parent meetings, consultation, case management, and reintegration back to school.  Additionally, School Social Workers are certified to provide the full continuum of Restorative Practices as an intervention and prevention model to foster school connection, build community, develop emotional literacy and cultivate conflict resolutions skills.  School Social Workers also provide prevention services including presenting the SOS Signs of Suicide® High School Prevention Program in classrooms as part of the Loudoun County Public Schools' Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention program.  They also co-present Substance Abuse Prevention in health classes. Student Assistance Specialist Student Assistance Specialists have master’s degrees in social work or counseling, frequently are licensed by Virginia Board of Social Work or Counseling, and have expertise in the fields of substance abuse and mental health.  They administer the Substance Abuse Prevention Program throughout the school district which includes K-12 prevention, intervention, consultation, and referral services. Student Assistance Specialists (SASs) provide services and interventions designed to enhance the social, emotional and academic success of students by helping to address the needs of the whole child. The foundation of these interventions is a strength based service delivery model focusing on developmental assets, risk/protective factors, prevention education and resiliency skill building. Services they provide include the following: Substance Abuse Assessments and referrals to outside agencies Substance Abuse Prevention/Intervention Groups and Individual sessions Facilitation of the Insight Class, a three day substance abuse prevention and early intervention class for students who violate the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) alcohol or drug policy. Classroom presentations on the risks of substance use, addiction and healthy alternatives. Staff presentations and professional development opportunities on current trends, signs and symptoms and prevention strategies regarding substance use, violence prevention, and available school based resources. Parent Presentations on current trends, signs and symptoms and prevention strategies regarding substance abuse, violence prevention, and community resources. Crisis Team - staff provide crisis intervention to affected students and staff following critical incidents. Smoking Reduction Program PBIS Support and Coaching Restorative Practices facilitation and training
