1 Flight Commander’s Handbook
Position Description Training the Cadets In-flight Positions Evaluating the Cadets

2 Position Description Job Description Common Tasks Common Problems
Flight CC Flight Sgt Common Tasks Common Problems Duties of Flight CC: -familiarize flight with OI’s -foster teamwork -measures proficiency Duties of Flight Sgt: -implement flight-level training -instruct and enforce OI’s/Regs -satisfy daily training goals set by Flt/CC Common Tasks: AM- barracks, uniform, PT- save time w/bunks by pairing cadets Daytime- fill in free moments in sched. with daily flight plan PM- clean barracks, prepare uniforms, feedback Common Problems: Group dynamics, individual- medical, homesick, interpersonal

3 Training The Cadets Planning Know the “Regs”
Using the AFROTC Training Guide Explain “Why’s” Motivating the Cadets Planning: Use Daily Flight Plan - walk through doing a sample plan Organization = BIG IMPACT on cadets+ their teamwork- you have your act together, they will get theirs together Set goals for each day, communicate them, implement, get feedback- follow through Know the regs: Can’t teach it if you don’t know it Using the ATG Brief outline of 5 steps- expectation, skills, feedback, consequences, growth Discuss how consequences apply to misbehavior in cadets- talk about common repeat offenses- moving at attention, talking in flight, etc. Explain Why’s: Explaining reasons for why we don’t move at attention, why we have formations, why we are inspected- think about it Motivating the Cadets: Another BIG IMPACT on cadets in flight Constantly re-invent, brainstorm, use every opportunity, stay with what works, dump what doesn’t

4 In-Flight Positions Concept Position Descriptions Using the ATG
This is your opportunity! Concept: To provide an opportunity for higher-ranking cadets to have responsibility above and beyond the basic cadet, and to provide this opportunity to as many as possible Element leader - can do all sorts of leadership tasks, from drill to taking over the flight momentarily, to assisting cadets. Standardization Officer (stando): Meets with Stan/Eval to act like CAC w/regards to inspection for the flight. Helps enforce inspection standards, and helps cadets learn Intelligence officer: briefs flight on current events from newspaper. Opportunity for less experienced to speak in front of group Knowledge officer: aids flight staff in quizzing cadets for daily knowledge requirements Using the ATG - set expectations, teach skills, give feedback and consequences, allow growth This is your opportunity- Flight staff make or break this program- opportunity to challenge older cadets, opportunity to catch them doing something right, great for cadet performance evaluation forms

5 Evaluating the Cadets Purpose Benefits Not to create add’l paperwork
Can be used next year Can be home unit How it fits in with ATG Purpose: To provide written, formal feedback to the cadets in the flight Allows cadet to assess his/her performance without wondering Benefits: Cadet will go home having an opportunity to reflect on mistakes, and feel good about accomplishments Can be brought to home unit for possible reward, or to identify weaknesses for improvement The forms can be used the following year for staff selection How it fits in the ATG- providing feedback, allowing growth

6 Most Important Points Most important points:
(have flight staff write these in on the printed handouts) 1. Most successful Flight CC/s are organized. Detailed plan, clear goals- easy to do, hard to keep doing. Works 100% of the time regardless of how good or bad the flight is 2. Most successful Flight Staffs keep flight motivated with fresh, creative, structured ideas… sticking to it and changing when needed - give cadets a story to tell!! Works 100% of the time regardless of how good or bad the flight is 3. Use the ATG - set expectations, think of and apply consequences 4. Use the in-flight positions as a challenge for the cadets in flight, not as “required by my superiors”. Makes all the difference in cadets’ perception of the program
