Fingerprint Patterns Shannon McSeveney completed:

2 Problem/question Does my fingerprint pattern look like my families?

3 Backround I choose this because i’m interested in fingerprints. My grandparents worked for BCI as fingerprinting technicians. I thought it would be interesting to see if there was some resemblance in fingerprint patterns.

4 Hypothesis If fingerprint patterns are inherited or are unique then i think they will be unique, but similar.

5 Variables Independent: Fingerprint pattern
Dependent: Whether or not the fingerprint pattern is the same Controls: The finger, Amount of ink, Way fingerprint is taken

6 Procedure Gather materials(Tri-board,ink pad,paper)
Take parents fingerprint put inked index finger on the paper put my index finger on ink pad put my finger on paper do the same for friends and family look at family prints compared to friends fingerprints put data on tri-board

7 Data When I looked at the data none of the prints looked alike. There was no similarity between the fingerprint patterns. Even family members showed no similarity.

8 Data The data shows that there was no similar fingerprints and
they were all different

9 Conclusion No, my fingerprint pattern does not look like my families. In my experiment I collected my families fingerprints. I used my cousins, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts prints. I looked at the pattern and saw there was no similarity in the fingerprint patterns.

10 Conclusion My data does not support my hypothesis. It doesn't because I thought there would be some kind of similarity in the pattern. I learned there is absolutely nothing similar about fingerprint patterns. When you are born you have your very own unique fingerprint.

11 Conclusion The problem I had was getting the fingerprints to show up well on the cards I used. The ink pad didn't work real well either. Next time I will get a better ink pad thats meant for taking fingerprints and use better paper.
