By referring closely to this poem and at least one other poem by Morgan, show how the writer uses language to create a striking visual impression or scene Identify commonality = 2 marks In both ‘Trio’ and ‘In the Snack-bar’, Morgan uses language to create a striking visual impression (0) In ‘Trio’, language is used to create a positive impression of three friends walking down Buchanan Street before Christmas. Morgan’s description of the scene gives a striking impression of their happiness and friendship (1) In ‘In the Snack-bar’, Morgan describes the experience of helping an old disabled man to the toilet. Through his use of language we are given a strong visual impression of the man’s disability and the challenges that he faces. (1)

By referring closely to this poem and at least one other poem by Morgan, show how the writer uses language to create a striking visual impression or scene Quote and explain from printed text = 2 marks Trio “the three of them are laughing, their breath rises in a cloud of happiness” (1) Metaphor Their breath on a cold night is being compared to a large visible body of condensed water vapour Just as a cloud is large so too are they laughing a lot This creates a strong visual impression as we appreciate how cold the night is, as their breath is visible, but also how joyful they are together, as they are laughing a lot (1)

By referring closely to this poem and at least one other poem by Morgan, show how the writer uses language to create a striking visual impression or scene Quote and explain from other text(s) x2 = 4 marks ‘In the Snack-bar’ “He stands in his stained beltless gaberdine like a monstrous animal caught in a tent” (1) Word choice “Monstrous” means to be like a monster It has connotations of being freakish and mis-shapen This creates a strong visual impression because it helps us understand how severe the man’s disabilities are, and also how strange he appears to the people around him and their negative judgements of him (1)

By referring closely to this poem and at least one other poem by Morgan, show how the writer uses language to create a striking visual impression or scene Quote and explain from other text(s) x2 = 4 marks ‘In the Snack-bar’ “He shambles uncouth into the clinical gleam.” (1) Morgan uses contrast “Shambles uncouth” describes the man’s awkward and uncomfortable movements “clinical gleam” makes it clear how clean and shiny the bathroom is This contrast creates a clear scene of the man in the bathroom and highlights further how difficult he finds it to fit in with the world around him. (1)
