2 RULE OF LAW The fact that we have laws and they are working is due to the fact that we accept laws. We accept laws because of the legal principle called RULE OF LAW. The 4 characteristics of this principle are as follows:

3 NEED we need laws to regulate people’s behaviors
that do not reflect our values or beliefs

4 WRITTEN the laws are written and easy to follow
everyone is aware of the law can’t be taken away or easy altered due process must be followed

5 EQUAL applies to everyone no one is above the law, incl. Gov’t!

6 CHANGE there is a set procedure to make and change laws.
laws can be changed to reflect changing values and technology. this gives people a sense of fairness and security. JUSTICE!!

7 Summary… The government and its officials as well as individuals are accountable under the law. The laws are clear, publicized, and just; are applied evenly; and protect fundamental rights, including the security of persons and property and certain core human rights.

8 Summary… The process by which the laws are enacted, administered, and enforced is accessible, fair, and efficient. Justice is delivered timely by competent, ethical, and independent representatives and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve.

9 Your Task… NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!!!
 How would you explain the rule of law to a fellow student who has never heard the term before? You might discuss why the rule of law is important, and how it impacts our daily lives. You must discuss any current events involving threats to the rule of law.
