What is Division?
Division is the process of breaking up a whole number into smaller equal groups of numbers. There are three parts in a division equation. The first is the dividend which is the number being divided. The second is the divisor which is the number that determines how many groups will be made. Lastly there is the quotient which is the number of items that equally fits into each group.
This is one whole group of 20 M&Ms. The divisors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20. This means that 20 can be divided evenly by each of these numbers.
Now lets divide 20 by 2. This means we will take 20 and create two equal groups of M&Ms. If you count how many M&Ms are in each group you will see that there are 10 left. 10 is the quotient of this equation. 20 1 10 10 2 20 2 5 5 5 5
Another way of dividing is using long division. You place the dividend inside the “house.” We put the divisor to the left or outside the “house.” Next you look at the first digit and determine how many times the divisor can go into that digit. You then subtract that number from the first digit of the dividend. You would then bring down the second digit of the dividend. You would see if the divisor can evenly fit into this. You keep track of how many times the divisor can fit into the dividend on top of the “house.” This is where the quotient will be.
If you divide this by 2 again, you are breaking each group you already have into 2 more groups. This means you will have a total of 4 groups in the end. Because you have 4 groups in the end, this is the same as dividing 20 by 4.
Now lets apply this to a real life situation. You plus two friends have 6 apples that you want to share evenly. Because there are 3 of you, 3 is your divisor and you will want to divide the 6 apples (the dividend) by that number. 3 can fit into 6 evenly 2 times meaning each friend would get 2 apples. Therefore 2 is the quotient.
