1 Argumentative Writing
Can you support your writing?

2 Aren’t persuasive and argumentative writing the same thing?
Design Plan Bui Test Evaluate . Yes, and no. The burden of proof is more demanding when writing an argument. Let’s compare the two…..

3 Persuasive Writing Argumentative Writing Starting Point: Identify your topic and chose your side Purpose: Get the reader to agree with your opinion Tone: Emotional charged and more aggressive Starting Point: Identify your topic, research it, and decide which side to support Purpose: get the reader to recognize your side of the argument is valid Tone: there is a calmer tone of just trying to get the reader to acknowledge the author’s side is worthy of consideration

4 Persuasive Technique:
Argumentative Technique: Combines facts with emotions to convince the reader that the author is “right” Emotion based Ignores counter claims Presents only idea that help establish a position Only presents one side – the author’s side Makes claims without evidence Offers facts, reasons, and evidence to show the author has valid points Logic-based Acknowledges the opposing claims May compare ideas to establish a position Presents multiple sides but it is clear which is the author’s side Always provides evidence with claims

5 Focus on Argumentative Writing
Study different sides of the same issue Align with one side and formulate an argument Develop logical reasons and support your side with sufficient proof Present both sides and identify weaknesses and strengths of each side Connect the ideas logically Conclude the argument

6 4 Main Parts of an Argument
Claim Counterclaim Reasoning Evidence

7 Remember Your Purpose Convince or persuade

8 Claim Stating what you want to prove Not just your opinion
Based on what you believe is true based on what you know and your research

9 Counterclaim The other side of the argument
Must be provable and supportable…NOT just “because I said so!” In an essay, try to think about what the counterclaims would be so you can come up with evidence to support your claim

10 Reasons Tell why Tells the importance Makes someone care
NEVER “because I said so”

11 Evidence Supports your reasons with facts, research, and experience
“Just because” is NOT evidence Something outside of YOUR brain

12 Let’s Practice Get into groups of 3 Open envelope 1.
Place the green cards in order on your desk. Read the yellow strips and decide where each would belong. There may be more than one yellow strip under each green item Raise your hand when your group has finished and I will check your work. Repeat process with other envelopes.
