1 8th grade warm ups Week of

2 Monday (Mon.) No warm up today because of MLK Holiday

3 Tuesday (Tues.) Read the following situation : Ben wants to put ketchup on his hamburger. He turns the ketchup bottle at an angle toward his plate and smacks the bottom of the bottle until the ketchup comes out.

4 Tuesday (Tues.) Q1: What is the unbalanced force? The force of hitting the bottom of the bottle is greater than the force holding the ketchup in the bottle. Q2: How does inertia affect the ketchup in the bottle? Once the ketchup starts moving it continues in the same velocity.

5 We were not in school from Wednesday, through Friday, because of snow and ice so I will just pick up my warm ups here and re-date/add to the next slides for the week of

7 Monday (Mon.) WU: A golfer swings her club down to hit a golf ball on the tee. What is the action and reaction? Ans: 1: The action is the club swings down to strike the golf ball. Ans: 2: The reaction is the ball moving away from the club on impact.

8 Tuesday (Tues.) Read: Amy weighs 78 pounds and her dad weighs 187 pounds. They are roller skating. Amy challenges her dad to a race. They stand poised at the starting line. Her mom yells “Ready, Set…Go!”

9 Tuesday (Tues.) WU: Based on Newton’s Second Law of Motion describe what you know and how will it affect the results of the race. Ans 1:The girl(78lbs.)pushes away faster and farther than her dad(187lbs.)because his mass is greater. Ans 2: Newton’s Second Law of Motion states that the greater the mass of an object the more force it will take to accelerate the object.

First law: An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will continue in the same speed and direction until an unbalanced force acts upon it. Second Law: The amount of force needed to accelerate an object depends on the object’s mass. Third Law: For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.

Explain your results. 2. A net force of 49 N causes a mass to accelerate at a rate of 7m/s/s. Determine the mass. 3. How much force is needed to accelerate a 122 kg skier 9 m/s/s?

14 Friday (Fri.) EQ: What are the types of waves and their properties? WU: What is a wave? Ans: A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy, the ability to do work, from place to place.
