2 Recap! What did the Missouri Compromise of 1820 decide?

3 Nebraska (part of the Louisiana Purchase) was largely unsettled until Congress organised the area into a territory. Q. Would you expect Nebraska to have slavery? Why?

4 By the end of this lesson everybody will be able to…
Outline Bleeding Kansas Explain the different causes of Bleeding Kansas Evaluate the significance of Bleeding Kansas in the de-stabilisation of North-South relations

5 3 Different type of causes
Necessary Preconditions: Without these there would never have been any conflict in Kansas. They need to be in place before any of the other causes can make it more likely that a conflict will break out. E.g. Imagine that there is a shooting. One of the Necessary Preconditions would be the gun. Without this, there would never have been a shooting, and it needs to be present before and of the other causes can make the shooting occur.

6 3 Different type of causes
Developing Causes These causes made it more likely that conflict in Kansas would break out, but they would have had no effect without the Necessary Preconditions. In some cases, without the Necessary Preconditions these causes themselves could never have happened. E.g. A developing causes of a shooting could be an argument between two people. This would make the shooting more likely, however it would have had no effect with out the Necessary Precondition (gun).

7 3 Different type of causes
Trigger Causes: These are what actually resulted in conflict breaking out in Kansas. However, they could have no effect whatsoever without the previous two types of causes. In particular, the Developing Causes created the situation in which the trigger would immediately lead to conflict breaking out. E.g. In the shooting, the trigger event would be the gun trigger being pulled. Pulling the trigger actually caused the shooting. However, it would not have happened without the gun and the argument.

8 Task You have been given a double-sided sheet Bleeding Kansas.

Using three colours, identify the Necessary Preconditions, the Developing Causes and Trigger Cause of Bleeding Kansas.

9 How significant was ‘Bleeding Kansas’ in the de-stabilisation of relations
Not significant Very significant It can be seen as the first violent actions of the Civil War. Compromise no longer seems possible. Kansas became a stage on which the wider tensions were played out The strength of reaction to events especially in the North led to a de-stabilising of relations and belief in the dangers of ‘Slave Power’.
