1 Expert drafting group on lakes report:
Criteria and procedures for the selection of types and waterbodies for the establishment of the intercalibration network for Lakes

2 Expert group meeting - lakes 19-21 February 2003 - Ispra
Adina Madalina State(Romania) Anne-Lyche Solheim (Norway) Ansa Pilke (Finland) Eddy Lammens (Netherlands) Geoffrey Phillips (UK) Helena Alves (Portugal) Ingmar Ott (Estonia) Jim Bowman (Ireland) Jochen Schaumburg (Germany) Pierre-Jean Martinez (France) Ramon Pena (Spain) Rosario Mosello (Italy) Veronika Koller-Kreimel (Austria) Willem Goedkoop (Sweden)

3 Proposed lake typology for IC
Based on preliminary proposals made spring 2002 in the expert drafting group on lakes (included in IC guidance) Confirmed the criteria for typological classification Altitude Geology most important typology criteria alkalinity and or calcium concentration to divide between calcareous and siliceous geology, and to use water colour to indicate organic or peat geology Mean depth Size One size category is now proposed little evidence for biological variability in lakes above a certain size

4 Recommended lake IC types

5 Pressures Desirable to deal with pressures separately
Important pressures for lakes: nutrient loading, acidification, toxic substances, physical modifications Recommendation: confine IC to eutrophication and acidification

6 Quality elements For eutrophication: For acidification:
Phytoplankton, Macrophytes/Periphyton (Fish and Macroinvertebrates relevant, but not enough data) For acidification: Macroinvertebrates (Other QE relevant - especially fish - but not enough data)

7 Pressures and types

8 Geographical IC groups
Six IC geographical (ecoregional) regions are proposed : 1. Northern: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia (?) and Lithuania (?) 2. Northern Atlantic: Norway, UK(Scotland), Ireland and Spain (Reservoirs) 3. Central: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Denmark (?), Southern Sweden, Great Britain, Austria, Estonia, Latvia (?), Lithuania (?), Poland, Czech Republic (?) and Slovakia (?) 4. Eastern Continental: Hungary (?), Austria, Romania, Slovakia (?) and Bulgaria 5. Alpine (including Carpathian and sub-alpine lakes): Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Slovenia and Romania 6. Mediterranean: Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Cyprus (Part?) and Malta (?)

9 Geographical IC groups and lake types

10 Geographical IC groups and lake types
