1 A description of a place
Writing

2 A description of a place can be of a building, a room, a town, an area or a visit.
We can write about its appearance, things that happen there and why we like or dislike it.

3 STRUCTURE In the introduction, give the name of the place and say where it is. In the next paragraph(s), describe the place and say why you (or other people) like it. In the final paragraph, say again why it’s a good place to go to.

4 CONTENT Choose a place you know well.
Use adjectives to describe the appearance and atmosphere of the place.

5 USEFUL LANGUAGE POSITION: ten minutes from where I live / on the coast / in the town centre / opposite / next to / near SUPERLATIVES: the oldest / the most beautiful / the best / the worst GIVING YOUR PERSONAL FEELINGS: What I like about … is / I love … GIVING REASONS: because … / The main reason is … ADJECTIVES: old / new / traditional / beautiful / small / big / quiet / busy GIVING ADVICE: I think everyone should visit …

6 MODEL WRITING Ten minutes from my house is the most beautiful area in the south of England. It is called “The New Forest” and people from different parts of England and different countries often come here on holiday. The New Forest is a very large area of natural forest and there are a lot of animals that live there. Horses and donkeys walk everywhere and sometimes you can even see pigs, cows and ducks crossing the road. What I like about the New Forest is that the colours of the forest change during the year. In autumn the leaves are red and gold and in the spring everything is purple and different shades of green. The trees are always colourful and different. Tourists often prefer to go to the small villages in the New Forest with pretty houses and traditional restaurants. I love to walk along the rivers and through the trees because there you can see the true heart of the forest.

7 TASK Write a description of the last place you visited on holiday. * Remember to check your description before you hand it in: spelling, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, structure, modifiers, linkers … Paragraph 1 Describe the place. What was it like? How was it different from your home town or country? Paragraph 2 Add extra information. What was the weather like? What was the food like? What were the people like? Paragraph 3 End the description. What did you like most / least about the place? Would you like to go back?
