1 Control or Control Group
a group of subjects in an experiment that are not given any special treatment Example The heart rate of someone not exercising.

2 plickers #1-3

3 Constants Factors in an experiment (both in the experimental and control groups) that are kept the same. Examples The type of exercise each person did. The type of stopwatch used during data collection The method used to measure the heart rate

4 plickers #4-5

5 Repeated Trials experimental tests are done more than once
gives us more accurate results; reduces chance error on the experimental results

6 plickers

7 Observations data that are descriptions of qualities such as shape, color, taste, feel, etc… acquired by using your senses Two Types: Objective observation Subjective observation

8 Observations Objective Subjective an observation based on fact
. Subjective an observation based on opinion

9 Objective or Subjective?
Science looks like fun today! Subjective Kanye West’s songs sound good! The counter-tops in class are black! Objective School French fries taste good! The summer was too short! There are sixty seconds in a minute!

10 Objective or Subjective?
Which type of observations should be used in science? Objective observations should be used in science because they are based on facts and the basis of science is to identify the facts!

11 plickers #6-8

12 Data factual information Two Types 1. Quantitative 2. Qualitative

13 2 Types of Data Quantitative data consisting of numbers Qualitative
Example Heart rate (80 beats/minute) Qualitative data consisting of words or drawings Examples Verbal description of heart rate (fast or slow)

14 Plickers

15 1. What was the independent variable
On the back of your surface tension lab write down these questions and then answer them. 1. What was the independent variable 2. What was the dependent variable 3. What was the control? 4. What was held constant Put your work in this order, staple them and hand them in the basket in the back. Notes from day 1,2 and 3, Jacobs tree experiment and graph and the surface tension lab paper and graph
