Emily Zheng, Scott Wang, Eric Quach, Wayne Hsu Period 1 Dams! What are they and what do they do?

2 Ask the students what their observations are. What do they see
Ask the students what their observations are. What do they see? What do they think it does? (Focus on WATER, which is very abundant in this photo!)

3 What is a dam? A dam is a wall that stops the flow of water.
Point out the water behind the wall in the photo, which shows how the dam stops the flow of water. You may also want to point out that there are cars that can drive over the dam!

4 It is one of the places we get energy to power our city.
If your students are confused about what energy is, relate energy to what makes our lights turn on, this powerpoint to work on the computer, etc.

5 Show them the different examples of energy listed in the bottom photo
Show them the different examples of energy listed in the bottom photo. Dams have the capability of allowing these things to function!

6 The water behind the dam is called potential energy, the energy that is saved without moving.
Emphasize the vocabulary word and highlight how all the water in the photo is stored behind the dam and is not moving!

7 The water released from the dam is called kinetic energy, the energy from moving.
Point out the gif, which is moving water, and compare it with the last slide, which was still water. Highlight the contrast between the two vocabulary terms, potential energy and kinetic energy.
