Write the name of the vocabulary word. Write the definition for each word in your notebook. Complete the task for each word.

4 # 1: Slavery The practice of owning people and forcing them to work for no pay Task: Create a sentence Using the word slavery. Use evidence from the picture to help you.

A war between groups in the same country. Task: Answer the following questions: Who fought in the Civil War in the United States? When was it fought? What was the key issue that the war was fought over? (Use your prior knowledge or look the answers up)

Task: Describe what is happening in this painting. Use the word “Emancipation” in your description. (2-3 sentences)

An order issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves in areas rebelling against the Union; took effect on January 1, 1863 Task: Some people have been critical of the statue pictured on the left. Using the phrase Emancipation Proclamation in your response, Explain whether you agree or disagree with the critics of this statue.

The plan to rebuild the South and bring it back into the United States after the Civil War. Task: Using the picture at left, answer the question: What needed to be rebuilt after the Civil War?

Doing away with separation based on race. Task: What is being desegregated in the image?

14 # 12 Discrimination The unequal treatment of people due to human differences such as race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Task: Create a sentence using the word discrimination and the image at left. Think about the type of discrimination in the image.

15 # 13 Civil Rights The rights all citizens of a nation have. Rights that include voting, choosing where to live and work. Task: How did people advocate and push for civil rights? (Use evidence from the image).

16 # 14 Demonstration Ways in which people try to let the government how they feel. Marches and rallies are kinds of demonstrations. Task: What are 2 things that the women in the image are demonstrating for?

17 # 15 Protest When people show how they disagree with something the government is doing. Protests are normally non-violent, and they try to create change. Task: Use the word protest in a sentence using information from the picture.

18 # 16 Sit-In A form of non-violent protest in which people sit at a restaurant that did not serve African Americans. Task: Make a prediction. How do you think the situation in the image ended 5 minutes later?

19 # 17 Integration Making schools, bathrooms and all public places upon to people of all races. Task: Create a sentence using the word integration. Use information from the picture.

20 # 18 Prejudice Making unfair judgements about people due to differences. Task: What is the prejudicial or stereotypical message that the image shows?

21 # 19 Boycott When people refuse to buy a product from stores in order to create change. Task: Why should people boycott NIKE products?
