What changes are happening in the American colonies?

2 Southern Plantations Most southern colonies economies were based on farming, growing cash crops (cotton, tobacco, indigo) Although most southerners were small farmers, big plantation owners, who used slave labor, dominated the south South developed little industry & shipping Northern Commerce Develops N. colonies economies were manufacturing based More shipbuilding, trading, and port cities in north Few slaves in north but much racial prejudice

4 Enlightenment influences America
1700s: Science more widely used, Enlightenment philosopher John Locke believed in natural rights (life, liberty, property) Colonist Ben Franklin begins using Enlightenment ideas like experimentation & reason Enlightenment stresses people to use reason and question things, ideas spread through pamphlets (esp in NE)

6 First Great Awakening : religion becomes less popular due to Enlightenment & people making money Preachers start series of revivals to revive religion Jonathan Edwards & George Whitfield state 1)God is angry, 2) individuals must connect with God, 3) everyone gets salvation Results of First Great Awakening: 1. People rededicate lives to God, challenged authority of established churches, don’t need church just God 2. Since everyone gets salvation, more equality is needed in US 3. New religions gain popularity
