Grammar 2/8

Yesterday you looked at some sentences and tried to imagine what might come next. Now let’s look at how professional writers used these same turning words.

Now, let’s look at these sentences….
Ask students to look at the turning word--where is it in the sentence? Is it at the beginning or the middle of the sentence? Why does it make sense there? How does it set up what comes next? (Encourage them to think about the explanations they heard yesterday...) Have the groups come up to the slide and explain their excerpt to the class.

Practice What’s the next sentence going to be?
*The mixing pot is always carefully covered because anything that falls in it is hard to get out. ---> * Since the training isn’t open to viewers, the referees announce a score for each player. ---> * Anthony was not particularly attached to the treasure he found, even though it had made him famous. --->

Excerpt #1: They want a better life for my sister and me. My sister is running away to get lost. I am running away because I want to find something. And my parents love me so much that they want to help me. (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, p. 46)*

Excerpt #2: The kimchee is scooped out with a huge wooden ladle. The pot is always carefully covered because anything that falls in it is hard to get out. Strands of hair--it would have been impossible to get them all out. (When My Name Was Keoko, p. 104)

Excerpt #3: Before that though, they’ll give me a score so low, no one in their right mind would sponsor me. That’s what will happen tonight. Since the training isn’t open to viewers, the Gamemakers announce a score for each player. It gives the audience a starting place for betting that will continue throughout the Games (The Hunger Games, p. 184).

Excerpt #4: So Anthony got the golden statue. It was his now. But he was not particularly attached to it, even though he and his statue had become famous. He had appeared on a TV show with it, and an article had been written that appeared in the Reader’s Digest. It was entitled “Pie in the Sky: A Plucky LAd’s Struggle for a Millionaire’s Gold.” Anthony got a little money out of this, but not much. As people sometimes find out, much to their sorrow, you can’t eat fame (The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn, p. 175).
